Can the Plex Media Server plugin make use of Intel QuickSync?

There are some Xeons out there that support QuickSync, Intel's hardware video transcoding solution. Plex, at least in some of its other forms, support QuickSync for transcoded streaming to devices. Does the Plex plugin for FreeNAS support this? It would be great!

The plugin doesn't and the plex forums don't say either way. Might be a good question for Mark <ziggimon at gmail dot com> from Plex.

The Plex Transcoding solution within Plex Media Server is using software rendering to re-encode video to device supported formats. There are two ways that the transcoder changes media format for the client, first being remuxing, simply changing the container format to one that the client understands (this requires audio and video to be in a client compatible format). Secondly the full on transcoding, where video/audio is in realtime re-encoded to another format. This is by far the heaviest. But there is as such no Quick Sync support added intentionally. Nor is there hardware acceleration built into the Plex Transcoder, its all software.

I'm actually curious as to how one sees Plex use the Quick Sync library. Any input here is welcome.

Mark, thanks so much for responding. To clarify: are you saying that no Plex product has ever utilized QuickSync? I thought I had seen that it did. Searching again briefly, I am not finding any support of this now. Maybe I had read something from a confused forum user before. Or assumed a media serving product would support it.

Has any Plex product ever supported QuickSync?

Maybe your confusing it with Plex Sync for mobile devices where it syncs content for offline viewing? As for Quick Sync, Plex has never had a product that utilizes it. So I can't say who mentioned it in forums before, I just know it's not something that is used for the plex product suite.

You know, the plex forums are the place to ask questions like this. Not the FreeNAS forums. As such I'm going to lock this thread as I don't want this thread to be the place people go to for a potentially wrong answer in the future.
