Hi guys.

I have a HP Proliant N40L On order which should be with me in the next couple of days.

I am looking at what OS to get and a friend suggested FreeNAS So far I can tell it will work for my needs except there's one thing i can't see and here it is.

Is it possible and if so how easy is it, To set-up my FreeNAS box to allow me to access my media when I am not at home but at work or away for work e.g in a hotel on WiFi say either on my net book or my ipad.

If it is possible to do this the Freenas is definitely what I want.

WOW. Odd questions and clearly aren't doing your own homework..

It is possible.. and it is as easy as it is based on your knowledge. Have no clue and don't know anything and this will be FAR over your head. Have 10 years of experience with FreeBSD and this will be a joke to setup.

You should read the manual, my guide(link in my sig) and do alot of other reading before you jump into this.

It will work. You can use Subsonic to stream music and video from your server to anywhere. All it requires is some rudimentary knowledge of port-forwarding.

Installing FreeNAS is awfully simple, but don't forget that if you're reusing a hard drive to install FreeNAS onto, zero it with the linux/unix command dd, otherwise it will fail to boot after successfully installing FreeNAS.

Go into the "plugins" section in Help/Support and follow the tutorials found their to properly install a Jail for plugins to run inside of. Then download & install Subsonic and any other plugins you want. Subsonic is kind of a beast to perfect but it should work with minimal configuring.
