I'm planning to repurpose an old Unitrends backup appliance (which is just a basic Supermicro server) and put TrueNAS onto it. The hardware is plenty capable but looking to setup a similar type of archiving system that the Unitrends could do.

Right now, it's a 4-bay server with an additional 4-bay expansion via an HBA card attached with external cables. The 4-drives in the expansion would be rotated off-site on a monthly basis so, 12 drives in total - 4 in the actual server (in Z1 or Z2) and two sets of 4 in the expansion, which would be swapped monthly.

My question is can TrueNAS archive in this way? I.e. have the primary data copied to the expansion on a daily basis, which once full, would then be removed and replaced with another other set of drives to start the process once more. I'm also trying to set this up so that it could be done without needing too much maintenance (i.e. having to re-create vdevs/pools etc. each time would not be practical).

To keep things simpler, could I just put a couple of larger drives in as mirrors in the expansion - and swap them out when needed? (instead of having a complete set of 4 in Z1/or Z2 for example).

Or is there another/better way to do this?
