Update from U3 to U5 went fine. Standard Plex jail created with FN v. 11 still working OK.

Every update I do, takes very ,very, very long to apply but I just accept it. It does end up working.
My system is pretty weak and it's on USB, so I'm forgiving, end of the day, it works.

I do have the "June 1, 2018, 1:24 p.m. - smartd_daemon is not running." others are reporting. But she seems ok?

And to answer my own question:

I tried the 18.04 installer on U5 today, no luck :(

Um, no, it wasn't. What makes you think this?

Hmmm. Weird. Yeah, I think I got that wrong. I definitely remember needing a new jail, trying to make one (the "old" way) and discovering that it was no longer possible in the GUI. That's the only reason I went iocage, seriously. I needed a jail and wasn't interested in learning the new iocage way (in hindsight, I realize I never would be :D), but I was "forced" to move to iocage. Looking at the old GUI right now, I see "Add Jail" is still there, so I don't know what my problem was.

Wait, there are no templates listed. Must have been something to do with that. Maybe I figured learning how to get the template back to make an old-style jail would be just as big a hassle as figuring out the new iocage way of doing things, and, since eventually the warden jail support would be gone (new GUI doesn't have it at all), that would be a better use of my time.

Wait, there are no templates listed.
That's been the case for a long time too (I think since 9.10-U2, when they finally pulled VirtualBox out). There's just the standard template, which is there, but doesn't show up in the drop-down.

The problem with warden jails is that they're stuck on a FreeBSD 11.0 template, which has been EOL since 90 days after 11.1 released. That's causing issues with pkg updates and such, though they can be worked around if needed.

So the bottom line is that building the jails with iocage is the better thing to be doing, though the ongoing networking issues with iocage are getting frustrating.

That's an understatement.
What's the issue and is it fixed in the nightlies for 11.2? I used several builds of 11.2 nightly and the UI improvements for iocage were huge.

However, I haven't actually gone and used the plugins much, just confirmed they make a jail, they install ok, etc.

Sticking to 11.1 U4. I have everything working the way I want it (including iocage - thanks to the regulars of this forum).

I don't know how the new update is because I updated on my lunch break and it's now unreachable (and for some reason IPMI also unreachable... maybe the cable is disconnected, I don't know). It's been about 2.5 hours and nothing is up.

Yikes, updating while away and not able to put out any fires, sounds like risks I wouldn't take. What hardware are you running. Seems conspicuously like the ASROCK debacle.

False alarm! I only did it because it's my home NAS. Not ASROCK. I'm running fully supported hardware . Can't remember exact model but a supermicro motherboard. It turned out to be a UEFI glitch . Same thing happens on my ASROCK motherboard on my PC though... It's like UEFI cant see certain devices on a soft boot. Once I shut down the NAS then started it again it was all good

Just checked and it's available. I'm waiting for the early adopters to report their findings............
On day two after release, I installed it on a system and on day three I installed it on another system. No problem so far.
First system has an old plugin Plex install and a bhyve Linux VM.

I'm still going to step back from the update a while longer. To be honest looking at the list of changes and updates. I don't see anything that would influence me to update right now. I have a stable and secure system at the moment so I will go on the basis of not trying to fix something that isn't broken.

I have a very weird issue. I'm not even certain what to check to root-cause the thing. It's not strictly 11.1-u5 issues as it happened in 11.1-RELEASE and I just rolled back to 11.0-u4 and figured I'd wait it out. I tried 11.1-u5 and the same thing's happening. So I figured I'd break down and ask wtfo!?

Topology:
4 fully populated 24 bay SAS jbod boxes w/Arecca SAS expanders. 2 w/750GB drives and 2 w/4TB drives.

When I update to 11.1-(RELEASE|u5) I get a hole in the number of drives the system sees. /dev/da47 in 11.0-u4 is the last drive in the 2nd of the 4TB populated jbod. In 11.1-u5 that drive/slot isn't even enumerated in the OS. /dev/da47 is the first drive of the first of the 750GB populated jbod. When doing a sequential access 'test':

Code:
for d in {0..95}; do echo "--- /dev/da${d} ---"; dd if=/dev/da${d} of=/dev/null bs=512m count=1; done

And watching the leds on the drive carriers. It gets to 46, as slot 22 (0 index) of 2nd 4TB jbod, skips over slot 23 (0 index) of that same jbod, and slot 0 of the first 750GB jbod is accessed. In 11.0-u4 there are no issues. All 96 drives are present and accounted for.

I have a diskmap from both versions for further verification:
Code:
root@freenas11: for d in {45..50}; do grep da${d} 11-0-u4/disk_map.txt; done ~ 0

There looks to be some odd enumeration in the 11-0-u4 case (all drives showing up):

Why does it enumerate da47 2x as the 750GB drive and once as the 4TB drive and bump the 750GB to da48 in the 11-0-u4 case but no enumeration entirely of that drive in
the 11-1-u5 case?

Any/all assitance would be _grand_!

Thanks!
