I have a chassis at work that has 16 drives in the head unit and 4 disk shelves (16 drives each) and everything is recognized properly. The difference for me is that I have older hardware (different SAS controller) and that is the only thing I can think of that might make the difference. It could be that some bug crept into the driver from one version to the next. Filing a bug might help the developers find it and fix it.
