I've tried using the auto-updater in the web gui and it failed, so I tried it manually and it also failed.

This is is what the console looks like, as well as the web-gui page:

It seems my Plex jail/server is still actually working and runs fine, and after a while the screensaver will actually start running.

This is the grub menu upon rebooting showing the existing (working) installation and the new one that doesn't.

Can anyone help please?
I have a feeling this is just going to be yet another "do a clean install", though. /sigh

I think i'd take a config save, and a do a clean install. Maybe someone else can add a better answer.

You can't use a config from a later version on an earlier version. eg you can't take a config from a nightly that is newer than stable and use it in stable. So yes, creating a new config is the best course of action.

Not necessarily better, but as an alternative, you could delete the non-working boot environment and try again.

1st attempt was the auto update, second was manual, are you suggesting I try a third time? what method?

Edit: Also I am deleting the 'bad' boot environment after the update fails so the only one I have is the working one. Tried restarting after that and updating too but same thing. Do the python errors mean anything to anyone? is there a way I can access a logfile of that entire boot-output somewhere?

Thanks in advance all.

Just to be clear, are you trying to update from Nightlies to STABLE, or STABLE to Nightlies? If the former, as @dlavigne said, you can't go from newer to older. If the latter, why would you be running Nightlies? Seems like asking for trouble on anything but a test box.

Yes nightlies to stable. You know, if that's not possible, to switch trains - why is the option there in the GUI? why does it not say "hey, you're on the nightly train right now you can't just switch to the stable one it won't work"? I mean am I an idiot or does this just seem like terrible design to anyone else? That was rhetorical - it's terrible design.

How the hell am I supposed to know that's not possible when the only error occurs after the thing has updated and rebooted and starts throwing out python errors that I have no idea of their meaning?

Jesus. H. Christ. I hate FreeNAS.

As a general proposition, if you use the nightly builds of any software you are risking unfortunate occurrences of one kind or another, which is why stable builds are called stable. (It may be relative!) If anything, an update of a nightly to a later stable build seems to be a safer proposition. Why not leave it at the current build until the next STABLE update comes out?

The purpose for having nightlies is so you can upgrade from a STABLE to a NIGHTLY, then roll BACK to your STABLE if/as necessary. You shouldn't really try to stay on the nightly train or anything unless you are doing heavy testing, in which case you probably aren't in the forums anyway...

When I do tests for things, I upgrade to a NIGHTLY, then roll back to the STABLE when I'm done.

It seems from the original post that there is not a STABLE boot image to roll back to, so he is trying to 'update' to the newest STABLE image available, which is older then the NIGHTLY he is currently running. Would it be best to wait for the next STABLE build?

It would be best to do a fresh install from a STABLE build, then reconfigure everything from scratch since he has no STABLE to go to. :/

Can you roll from a nightly build from July to the latest stable build? or do you have to rollback before upgrading? Assuming you do rollback, does that require rolling back the config as well?

Once you are on a nightly you should never try to go back to stable. Since you have no stable to go back to, that's why I recommended doing a fresh install. You should always have a stable build to roll back to so you can go forward with the rest of the world. ;)

So if I do fresh install of 9.3.1, then setup config from scratch I should be okay. I'm assuming I just import my pool after doing a fresh install, but I will still have to re-setup all my jails, user settings, etc. correct? I have Plex, Couchpotato, SABnzbd, and Sickbeard running in jails, just not sure what all is in the config versus stored in my pool.
