Just looking for a little advice.

I currently have a 3TB hard drive in my FreeNAS machine. It is one of these (bought a year or so ago):

What I would like to do is have 3 x 3TB hard drives in ZFA Raid-Z i think it is (allow 1 HD failure)

Now because these drives have only 1 year warranty and they are not designed for 24x7 operation like some other nas drives, my question is should I just buy 2 more of these and hope they are alright?

Or should I forget that drive and go for something like the NAS version of these or the WB red:

Or can I use my current Seagate and Raid this with two newer nas drives? Does the difference in rpm make a huge problem for me?

Thank in advance for anybody's thoughts! :)

RAIDZ1 is not a recommended config(see the link in my sig) and go with RAIDZ2.

I'd never recommend 7200RPM drives unless you are needing a pool of low latency drives. Your pool isn't designed to promote low latency, so I'd go with Reds strictly because of the lower RPM. RPM does matter, but not for home use. In an enterprise environment mixing the RPMs would be weird.

Thanks for the reply (and so quickly!!!)

RAIDZ2 would require me to have either more disks or If I use only 3 then I will only have 3TB of usable space, correct?

And finally, as I have one disk already, can I mix this with new RED drives? Or should I use it as a separate backup drive?

You would need more disks.

You can mix disks. What the best situation is something you should decide for yourself.
