What's Next? Meet Our New Brand Mascot

Many people have come to us asking “What’s next?” for TrueNAS now that we’ve released TrueNAS SCALE. With TrueNAS CORE as a close sister project, both of these projects are closely related and bring exciting, unique features to the TrueNAS Open Source stratosphere. The legendary stability of FreeBSD and the feature-rich capabilities of Linux is a compelling combination, especially with TrueCommand where each can work seamlessly with the other.

As we at iX continue to practice what some would call a “kaizen” philosophy, we’ve realized that our brand needs to evolve with our company. To make that evolution a reality, it became abundantly clear that we needed to create a new mascot and logo that will resonate within our expanded Community. Taking Beastie and Tux, we’ve reimagined what this brave new world of cooperation between Open Source communities may look like. We value preliminary feedback from the community on this since it will become the new face of iX and TrueNAS.

Joshua, AKA JoshDW19, said of the conceptualization of our new community mascot: “It is time we realize the importance of representing both Linux and FreeBSD together as one. Imagine how the planeteers would join forces back in the day and become Captain Planet. It’s kind of like that.” Marissa, the concept artist behind our new mascot (who tried to stay anonymous for unknown reasons), simply said: “Why…” and “Well, I guess it could be worse…” of the final product.

Having put such a significant amount of time and effort into early drafts of the design, the plan was starting to come together, and a new character was rising to the surface, ready to unite Open Source communities everywhere. As I sharpened my crayon, the image became more and more clear as I tried to convey the key branding elements to the graphic design team.

Without further ado, here is the new concept art that we’ve come up with. We’ve considered turning this into a series of NFTs that could be highly valuable if someone accidentally bought them, but so far have not found an artist up to the challenge. In fact, many of the artists that I’ve contacted have completely ghosted me when I told them about the concept.

By the way, if you believe this is real, please check your calendar. Happy April Fool’s Day!

I like the gradient texture that went out of style by the year 2000.

Love this April Fools joke! Someone spent too much time on it. If it isn't a joke, at least it's funny.

“It is time we realize the importance of representing both Linux and FreeBSD together as one."

Insider knowledge that the next iteration of TrueNAS will run with a FreeBSD kernel and support installing .deb packages? Oh joy!

This was very helpful, thank you!

I am in the process of putting together a replacement for my 7 year old NAS, that started as FreeNAS and is now TrueNAS Core. This venerable box has served me well and has proudly displayed itself to the house with this logo.

But with the new server I was in a bit of a dilemma. Should I stick with Core? Should I brave Scale? What do I do with the logo? I can't use the FreeBSD devil if I end up going Scale... I had no solution until I saw the new Mascot, then it was all solved for me. So thanks again!
