Advice to what extent? How to do it? Or wether to do it at all?

And why not? 12.0-U3.1 is the current stable release. I don't see any reason not to.

Are you running the lastest 11.3?

Any comments on going 11.1 to 12? Yes this has been a long time coming.

Other details - I have many shares that have permissions from my AD. Also everything was created back on 9.8 when I originally built it.

Well... I went ahead and jumped into this. Broke my connection to AD and trying to figure this out now. Luckily I don't need this running right now so I have a few days to figure out what went wrong and fix it before I go back to the previous install (11.1) and hope it works. I can at least go up to 11.3 because I have another machine running that version and connecting to my AD without an issue.

Going back to 11.1 made everything work again. I'm going to go through and update to 11.2, then 11.3 and then again to 12 to see where it breaks and try to figure out why. I seem to recall my Backup being upgraded to 11.2 and then 11.3 and remained working with no issues during that process last year. If I ca get my main server up to 11.3 then I'll probably be fine for another span of time.

(edit) BTW, I have 120gb system drives in this machine, so I can hold on to a lot of old installs.

Going to post a new thread before I go farther... Up to 11.3-u5 and everything is working as normal and not sure I want to spend the time messing with 12 anymore.

12 has some useful features that you may or may not be interested in.

  • Better Mac SMB support (no issues with my Macs anymore, including Apple-filename character sets)
  • Support for sVDEVs (requires irreversible pool upgrade though and likely a full rebuild to take advantage of metadata and small files being stored in the sVDEV. Be very careful about adding sVDEVs. Understand what they can and cannot do. This is a knife that might your life a lot faster but it can also kill your pool. )
  • Native crypto (I made a backup of my stuff and then ditched the pool, rebuilt it in 12)
  • persistent L2ARC
I'm sure there is more. But those were the big ones for me.
