My first DIY NAS - need some help (X10SDV-TLN4F)

Hey guys,

As i've said in the title, i'm thinking of building my first DIY NAS based on Supermicro's X10SDV-TLN4F.
I tried my best to select good and compatible hardware but i'm just unsure and I want some opinions and if possible recommendations.

What I'm trying to build is a fast and reliable NAS with single 4K/multiple 1080P streaming and virtualization capabilities.
As for raid I'm going with Z2 for security reasons and 10x 6TB HDDs which will give me about 48TB of free usable space.

Do keep in mind that it's not easy to get all sorts of hardware where I live (Portugal) and that importing (from outside of EU) is expensive.

Now with the problems I have found (besides the ridiculous amount of money it will cost)...

1 - The motherboard only has 6x SATA connectors so I'm going to need a PCI Express SATA Card with at least 4 more.
2 - The PSU only has 9 sata power connectors so I need a sata power splitter or a molex to sata adapter. Not sure which is best.

Please help me and if possible recommend me good and reliable hardware for the pci-e sata card and sata power splitter or molex2sata adapter.

Also, please give me your thoughts about the build and if you think that I should change something or buy something, please tell me.

The hardware recommendations guide would have answered this for you--a LSI/Broadcom/Avago SAS HBA is your answer here.

As to the power issue, with that many drives, you might want to consider a rack-mount chassis--a used one would be fine. Aside from storage density, good ones will include backplanes that will handle power and data distribution. They'll often include power supplies as well.

Hello danb35,

I'm not really much into hardware so I wasn't sure if the PCI-e Sata card was the best option but I'll look into it, thank you.

As for the rack mount chassis I'm not even sure what it is or where to start looking. I'll research it a little bit more but thank you.

Please keep in mind that one should keep 20% free space in a ZFS pool, so

Total raw storage: 10 x 6 Terabytes = 60 Terabytes
Maximum usable storage: Approx. 8 x 6 Terabytes = 48 Terabytes
Practical usable storage: 48 Terabytes * 0.8 = 38.4 Terabytes (20% free)
Using binary prefixes: 34.9 Tebibytes (1 Tebi = 1024^4)
