I really think IXsystems should do something about this. Everytime I upgrade (via GUI) it takes about 40 minutes. Right now I'm 55 minutes into 20%, that's not acceptable.
USB 3.0 in a RAID1, Kingston Traveler.
Other than that, really good specs.
Well, I run ESXi on USB flash drives as well, and there it takes around 10 minutes or less for each update. Looking at `top` when the FreeNAS update is running shows that it's idle most of the time. To me that's ineffective.
I think the update interface just needs to convey more information. It’s not clear if the update is stalled or is taking too long; users aren’t sure if they just need to refresh the tab, or if refreshing the tab will abort the update.
Ideally the update page would show the status of any update currently being applied (even if the browser tab is closed), and include a note like “installs on USB media can take 1-2 hours”.
