I'm trying install ubuntu 17 inside of a VM and my VNC Client never gets past "Preparing Desktop". Anyone else encounter this?

What are your system specs? What version of FreeNAS are you running? I'd try to recreate it on my end if you can provide enough data for me to do so.

Dell R710
2x6 core intel cpus.
128GB memory.
FreeNAS 11 Nightlies from about 1.5 weeks ago.

Just doing an update not to see if it solves it.

Okay, FreeNAS 11 is still in Alpha testing. I just updated my VM of this machine about 20 minutes ago.

Guess I need to download Ubuntu 17.04 now, and what version are you running, Desktop, Server, Cloud, ..... But this will have to wait, the wife said she is ready to head into town. I'll come back to this later.

Also, have you tried an earlier version of Ubuntu yet?

I'm trying to install the 64bit desktop edition. The ISO is ubuntu-17.04-desktop-amd64.iso. Just finished updating FreeNAS, deleted the vm, and added the vm back again. Same thing. My CentOS7 and FreeBSD VMs run fine and I can VNC to them.

16.04 seems to work fine!

I think you found your issue, well sort of. I just saw a video on the internet of a person installing Ubuntu 17.04 on FreeBSD so I think the issue migth be with FreeNAS 11. You should look into installing Ubuntu on FreeBSD 11 and just make sure there are no issues. If there are not issues then a bug report should be submitted against FreeNAS 11. Make sure you document your troubleshooting to help the developers.

There are multiple threads on this exact topic, as far as I'm aware they all have the same resolution.
