I've just updated my Freenas to 9.2.0 x64 and I am now looking to install PLEX but I need get my jails set up (I think)

I currently have one disk set up on my Freenas box and I can see a jail listed when I look under the storage tab (I'm not sure how that jail volume got there, I can't remember if it's always been there or I set it up)

If I click on the jails tab there is nothing in there

If I try to add a jail I get a strange error and have no idea what it means

I was hoping someone with more skill and experience might be able to help me get the PLEX jail and plug in installed if you have any advise please drop a message below :)

why would you update to FN9.2 when FN9.3 is out?

I was told to update from 9.1 to 9.2 and then to 9.2.9 and then 9.3 rather than making the jump from 9.1 straight to 9.3.

I've only gone as for as 9.2 at the moment.

Can you help me with my jails and PLEX issue please?

ahh, I see. id personally fresh install 9.3

if you're planning on updating to 9.3 why don't you do that first before setting up your plugins?

What would a fresh install involve?

My knowledge of Freenas is limited and I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible as I am worried about losing or corrupting my data.

The current USB running 9.2 x64 powering my Freenas box seems to be working fine. If I fresh installed Freenas 9.3 I'm worried it wouldn't read the current data on my Freenas box and I'd lose 10 years of pictures, music and videos.

Could you help me get PLEX up and running on my current system please? :)

a fresh install would mean installing FN9.3 to a USB stick. none of your data is on your current stick, it's all on your zpool (your HDD(s))

if you want to be safe..
* unplug your current USB and HDD(s)
* install FN9.3 to a new USB stick
* plug in your HDD(s)
* import your old zpool

I think your issue is your install is looking to download a jail template from an old download server or the template for FN9.2 was removed.

Sorry to ask so many questions, just a couple more so I am clear and confident on everything.

1. If I make the 9.3 install on a new/different USB if anything goes wrong I can just plug in the old USB and pick up where I left off?

2. How do I import my old zpool? This is beyond my knowledge or skill level at the moment and I don't feel comfortable doing it.

3. I forgot to mention I don't have a screen to attach to the Freenas box, do I need this for the fresh install? I remember having lots of problems getting the original Freenas 9.1 up and running due to not having a screen, and don't want to go through that pain again.

4. Is it possible just to get PLEX working on this 9.2 install? That would be my ideal situation

Thanks again for helping and supporting me with this.

P.S I have team viewer if you would be interested in assisting getting it up and running. Thank you :)

One final thing ......

I just doubled clicked on PLEX from the plugin screen to intall it. It got about half way through the install and then a messaged popped up saying 'an error occured' and the install cancelled it's self. I'm not sure why this happened.

Hope you still feel you can help me.

Correct, as long as you don't upgrade your pool. You would have to take a distinct action to upgrade the pool; don't do that until you're sure that 9.3 will work for you.

You shouldn't; you could do the installation on any other computer (or even on a VM) and then move the boot USB to your server.

So just to be clear - at this point you are suggesting I install 9.3 on a new/different USB (and I can do this from a Windows machine?)

If I put the 9.3 USB stick in my server and it boots then I can go ahead and look at importing the old zpool?

Side note - If I can't figure out how to import the old zpool I can just put in my 9.2 UBS and pick up as if nothing has happened/changed?

Sorry to be going over this in such fine detail with you, it's all well out side of my current skill set so I just want to make sure I am as clear as possible on everything before I go ahead and make any changes. Thank you for replying to all my questions and for your patience with me.

Correct. You'll need to put the ISO installer on something you can boot from, like a CD or a USB stick. You'll then need a separate USB stick of 8 GB or more to install onto. You'll boot the installer, and using that, install FreeNAS onto the other USB stick. As long as your Windows machine is minimally compatible with FreeBSD, you should be fine. If you don't want to reboot your Windows machine, you can set up a VM using something like VirtualBox and do the installation within the VM onto the USB stick.

Yes.

Yes.

Just an additional thought .........

When I set up 9.1 I needed to connect a screen and went through an additional install/configuration process as shown at 3.43 on this video

If I create a fresh 9.3 USB will I not need to configure it? (Meaning I will need to attach a screen to my Freenas server?) Or am I miss understanding something? Just to remind you I don't have a screen to attach to the Freenas box currently.

Thanks for clarifying on this for me :)

as long as it boots up on the new hardware I think all you'll need to do is figure out the IP to manage it.

The installer will require you have a screen. You don't have to do the install on your freenas box though you can run the installer on a different computer then transfer the usb to the freenas box and boot it up. Then all you need is the IP at that point. You should also save your config from your old isntall and make sure all your data is backed up safely. You said you also only have a single drive attached? Do you realize if that drive dies all your data is gone?

You definitely need more drives, at least 2 and you can have ZFS mirror to the other drive.

I pay for CrashPlan and then I use the CrashPlan plugin jail to do the backup to their servers for an off site copy of my photos and data. I have some good notes over that setup process if your interested.

If you care about your data back it up! :)
