Two questions -
1) Does 'zfs receive' utilize the ZIL and therefor a SLOG if you have one?

2) I have several 16 drive (3.5") chassis that I've inherited that I'll be using for backups for VM hosts. I'll be using zfs send/rec to get the data there. Would I be better off having two 8 drive raidz2 vdevs or one 10 drive raidz2 and one 6 drive raidz2 - the second configuration following the 2^n+p rule?

Thanks in advance,
Elliot

No, zfs recv uses async writes since it's supposed to be a quasi-atomic process (a snapshot either exists and is valid or doesn't exist).

Symmetry is good for OCD. Strict rules for vdev sizing are mostly bogus. So I'd say 2x 8.

Firehose of sequential writes :)

RaidZ2 yums it up.
