No, that's not anything like what @Stux is suggesting. He's saying you can create a ramdisk on your FreeNAS box, add that to your pool as SLOG, and then see if it results in any improvement in performance. If it does, then you might want to consider adding a proper SLOG device. If it doesn't (and it won't), you can save your money.

I didn't know a RAM disk was possible on FreeNAS. That new information to me.

Well, RAM disks aren't exactly esoteric, especially in Unixland.
