Hello everyone,
this is my very first build of FreeNAS and after I've read forums and best practices - I've decided I will go with more expensive ECC (vs NON-ECC). This is based on some disastrous messages about lost pools etc. Could you please give me your opinion...will it work?

NAS will be primarily used to store family photos, some music, etc + I plan to use Owncloud plugin.

As MOBO of my choice I would like to go with:
https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/X11/X11SCH-F.cfm

It can take 2400 MHZ RAM modules, has 8 SATA ports + 2 NIC + IPMI as a Bonus

Is some external SATA controller in PCI-e better choice? Speed-wise...

CPU:
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...core-i3-8100-processor-6m-cache-3-60-ghz.html

RAM:
The MOBO support only unbuffered RAM, and CPU is limited to 2400 Mhz RAM - Could you please suggest some ECC Unbuffered "budget" memory modules which will work with MOBO as well as CPU?
I was looking at Kingston Server Premier, but this particular MOBO isn't in their compatibility list (yet?).

OS should be running on two cheaper mirrored SSDs - is this an overkill?

HDD:
6 x 4 TB WD RED in RAIDZ2
https://www.newegg.com/global/sg-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236599

Those are 5400 RPM, should I go with 7200 RPM WD RED PRO?
Will it feel slow? Has anyone got some experience with the difference?

And not so important for the build itself, but:

PSU:
https://www.bequiet.com/en/powersupply/1252 - 550W

Do you think I could go with 450 W version which also has 8 SATA connectors?
I've used https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator to calculate the consumption and I should be fine. Or is it better to have a stronger PSU?

PCIe slots offer lots of flexibility and the very slight increase in latency you might experience will be totally overshadowed by network latency, interactions with the ZIL etc.

I believe FreeNAS cares more about how much RAM you have rather than the speed.

I wouldn't go that low. Its nice to have a slightly larger PSU to give a bit of headroom and ensure stability. What case are you using?

What's that supposed to mean? I don't understand what you're trying to say.

@haagen, have you read the Hardware Recommendations Guide? You're on the right track, but most of your questions have a very "quick" yes as an answer.

Motherboard is fine, CPU is fine, but consider the i3-8300, RAM will have to be something from Supermicro's QVL. For the PSU, I recommend something better - Seasonic Focus Plus or Corsair RM or better. 30W per hard drive plus TDP of remaining parts minimum.

@haagen asked about using a SATA controller and whether doing so has speed concerns. I just meant to say that using a SAS controller (HBA) would not decrease speed or increase latency enough if at all to be worried about using one.
