Not sure if this is the best place to be posting this but I apologies in advanced if its not.

Does anyone else think having WORM as a feature would be brilliant? Not sure if this would be best implemented in ZFS, FreeNAS or an external plug-in but would be a really cool feature.

Is there a standard for it? How is it different from CDR or DVDR? The drive might handle it internally, like with a UDF filesystem. Or it could pretend to be a tape drive, and show up as an sa(4) device. Then you'd use mt(1) to skip to marks.

It seems like these drives and media are rare and expensive, though.

Just the ability to create a specific dataset with the attributes of WORM (meaning data cannot be deleted once wrote) would be great. Our organisation currently has a need for such a solution and currently are looking at https://www.archivematica.org/en/ or https://arkivum.com but as disks systems are so cheap these days it would make sense to bring the features to a disk based appliance on prem. I know Nexenta did/do a WORM plug-in although Im not familiar with it.
