I'm proposing the following build for a friend who needs a NAS. It'll be used mainly for documents and pictures for a law firm; 6-10 users.
  • CPU Intel i3-8100
  • Motherboard Supermicro X11SCA-F
  • RAM Kingston 16GB 2400MHz DDR ECC UDIMM KVR24E17D8/16
  • HDD WD Red 3TB x6 RAIDZ2
  • Case Fractal Design R6
  • PSU Seasonic Focus Plus 650W 80 Plus Gold
  • SSD ADATA SU650 128GB SATA III x2 (mirrored for OS)
I have a couple of questions:
  1. Since the X11SCA-F supports 8 SATA connections, I don't plan to get a dedicated SAS HBA to keep the cost down (it's not easy to get cheap or second hand SAS HBAs here). I've read elsewhere on this forum (older posts) that it should be OK. Is this still OK?
  2. What's the difference between the i3-8100 vs i3-8300? From what I can gather, they only differ in clockspeed. i3-8100 is chosen here because I can get it locally and it's about USD70 cheaper than the i3-8300 (I have to buy it from Amazon and ship it internationally)

Thanks.

Yep. I've been using the X11SCH-F which is pretty similar just in micro atx size and I have 5x 8tb WD Red NAS drives hooked up

Clockspeed, cache, TDP and igp. As seen here: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?productIds=129942,126688
Won't make a difference for you build. I would buy what ever you could easily get.
