Hi All,

I am pretty new to FreeNAS and NAS in general. I am thinking of building a FreeNAS instead of buying. I am considering of buying a used a machine.

I came across a few. Below is the config for the ones i am thinking of buying. It will be around 100-150 euros.

First machine:-
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Sli
Am3 + socket
CPU And phenom 980x 3.7ghz quad core
64gb ssd
250gbg hdd
Nocthua Cpu cooler
R7 240 2gb ddr3 graphics card HDMI
8gb ddr3 frame

Second Machine:-
Hp pavilion P6
I5 2310 3ghz quad core
500gb had
8gb ddr3 ram
Ari hd 7 series low profile 1gb ddr3

Drives:-
WD RED drives:- 3 TB (2)

What i want to acheive:-
FreeNAS, opencloud and Plex server for media sharing and streaming

Can any of the machine will be able to handle? I can expand the ram to 16 gb if thats the bottle neck.

Or is there any option to buy a standalone nas for the same price?

Sorry for a lot of question, i am abit confused how to procced. How somebody can help:)

None of those support ECC RAM. Although it will work without ECC, it is not recommended. Since you are going to buy it, I would advise you to buy proper server hardware instead of buying desktop grade parts.
Also 8GB is the minimum required to run FreeNAS. You would need more to run plugins like Plex, etc.
You don't need a GPU for FreeNAS other than for the initial install. If you have IPMI, usually available only on server grade hardware, you don't need the GPU even for the install as you can use IPMI.

Have you read the Hardware Recommendations Guide yet?

Any system you buy for that little money will not be worthy of running FreeNAS. Just because the name has FREE in it doesn't mean that you can run it on any old junk you can find.

You need to review the hardware guide:

Then take a look at these resources:
