Can't find your server in 'network neighborhood? Welcome to the world of Windows networking!
At some future time I'll add another flowchart depicting changes after Server 2003 (MS deprecated the netbios API and unified the host discovery APIs, which should work better... except when it doesn't).

Based on materials in Mastering Windows Server 2003 by Mark Minasi etal. (Yes, I know that's not a proper citation. I don't care.)
