I have been running and searching for a good HBA for my first FreeNAS build.

My environment is an educational one. We will use the NAS as the placeholder for an offsite backup which will run nightly. Thus basically sequential writes and rarely a read.

We will also use a share of the disk space, to offer it as a repository for documents / videos to use during lessons. This usage might require random reads but will be rarely used.

My idea is to have 4 x 3TB SATA 3 (6Gb/s) Disks plugged to a retired desktop computer with some upgrades. Upgrading RAM to the max the motherboard supports, thus 16Gb.

My main question regards to the HBA. Ideally I want a card which out of the box is good to plug in and use. I do not want to flash any firmware - I prefer to use it out of the box. Which do you recommend which works out of the box and does not cost an arm and a length. a 200USD should give a good idea on the budget.

If you don't want to flash firmware, not sure where you want to go. Pretty much every card out there needs firmware updates out of the box.. so you're really asking for a miracle...

The FreeBSD 9 hardware support list will give you everything you want. But to be frank, if your requirement is that you need a card that doesn't require you to flash firmware, you probably don't want to build a file server then. Keeping firmware for controllers up-to-date is par for the course...
