I'm in the process of building my FreeNAS box. The mother board i've selected is a SuperMicro A1SRi-2758F. It has 6 sata ports, 4 are sata II and 2 are sata III. I'd liek to take advantage of the sata III speeds so i'd like to purchase this, Syba SI-PEX40057 pci card. Its a 4 port sata III card.

DOes anyone know if installing this add-in card will cause performance issues?

I plan on utilizing 6 WD Red 6tb drives.

Reds won't even come close to saturating SATA II.

6TB Red is around 135MB/s
SATA II theoretical maximum 300 MB/s
SATA III theoretical maximum 600 MB/s

Besides, the only good SATA controllers are Intel's. Only SAS controller compete, unfortunately.

Thanks for the input. I did read on WD site that the 6tb red is sata III compatible and that they support speeds up to 6.0 gbps.

It's like your car's speedometer going up to 180. It's an arbitrary 'limit' that can't be practically achieved.

The drive controller supports the SATA III standard but the drive can't sustain the speed.
