SOLVED Weird issue with nano inside jail

I'm having issues with using nano inside of a jail, where the interface turns out all garbled. This is what nano looks like outside the jail:



And this is what is looks like inside a jail:


It does the same in multiple SSH clients, does it in all my jails no matter the version of nano (ie. plex is 2.9.8 and recent jail is 3.1, still the same behaviour. This also happens in ee:




Seems to be an issue inside the jail. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

As a short term workaround, type set term=xterm in your jail to fix the terminal before you run nano.
