Hello, I have a new freenas and when I create a virtual machine it fails because a machine does not support vt. I will configure the BIOS and activate the vt and it does not work. Can you help me?

Server specifications:
Processor: Core 2 quad q6600 3.2ghz OC
Gpu: Gt 710
RAM: 6gb 667mhz
Nox Hummer 650w
Motherboard: Abit ix38 quadgt

Hi @Angelll - From https://www.ixsystems.com/documentation/freenas/11.2/virtualmachines.html:
FreeNAS® VMs use the bhyve(8) virtual machine software. This type of virtualization requires an Intel processor with Extended Page Tables (EPT) or an AMD processor with Rapid Virtualization Indexing (RVI) or Nested Page Tables (NPT).

To verify that an Intel processor has the required features, use Shell to run grep VT-x /var/run/dmesg.boot. If the EPT and UG features are shown, this processor can be used with bhyve.

Here is what I get:
root@freenas[~]# grep VT-x /var/run/dmesg.boot
VT-x: PAT,HLT,MTF,PAUSE,EPT,UG,VPID
VT-x: PAT,HLT,MTF,PAUSE,EPT,UG,VPID

Note that I have Xeon E5-2630 CPUs.

I know that on an old Dell PowerEdge 2940 III I could not run VMs on that server as it did not have all the virtualization features required.

I suspect that you don't have all the CPU features required for virtualization.

I will also note that your system doesn't seem well matched to what you are trying to achieve (unless this is a chucking around system; e.g., not for production use). See https://www.freenas.org/faq/ and https://www.ixsystems.com/documentation/freenas/11.3-U1/freenas.html for recommendations.
  • CPU is overclocked - I wouldn't do that
  • RAM is really low. 8GB is minimum recommended - without trying to run VMs
Again, if you are just fooling around with FreeNAS, fill your boots and be ready for fustration. If this is for daily (production) use, follow the guide. of course, it is YOUR data so it is your risks.
