Hey Guys,

I figured i would post my build log ( will add pictures ) of my build. This is my first time building a freenas box and wanted to try and document it. I want to build this and use it as a media streaming along with data storage for some of my work. I just wired my house with cat 6 and a dell 2412 web managed switch to prepare for this nas system. I dropped at least 1 wire in each room along with 8 in my loft ( office ). Some external devices i have include a OBI100 and HDHomerun for over the air signal. my HTPC Part list are below, The 'Full HTPC' does the lets say processing of the tv shows and movies and the 'Mini HTPC' is just a streamer. I also have a WRT Router for wireless. I think i finally found an 'N' supported wifi card that i can buy to put inside the m0n0wall router.

man I wish I had money, I'd totally get 10x3TB Harddrives and 4x8GB Ram! awesome build!

Any reason you choose monowall over pfsense? I'm a pfsense user and love it but haven't tried anything else (except ddwrt).

Wow. Nice budget and some seriously clean cabling. Makes me think i need redo mine!

How do you like the fractal design case? I've been looking at either another Antec P280 or one of these. I don't have 10 drives yet but someday...

The P280 is awesome for my main pc. Can't speak highly enough of it.

I just changed to pfsense due to it support a g wireless card from www.thinkpenguin.com. Hopefully the next release will support N.

I did buy an 8inch longer 4 pin cable so i could run the cable around the back instead of in the front.

THe case is awesome. I would put it close to the same level as corsair. Maybe not as HIGH of quality but def up there. THe sound damping on the inside was a plus. For a nas that has ever fan possible to keep it cool its nice and quiet. Def same some money and get a fractal design case.

NICE BUILD! I'm very curious as to how your using your HDHomerun. I've been pulling my hair out with it on how I'm going to implement it. Are you only using it on your HTPC or are you recording with it some how with FreeNAS (my goal)? I do not want another machine on my network just to record TV & would prefer I could record/schedule with something on FreeNAS & view with just about any other device (WDTV/W7 WMC/tablet/phone/etc).

The HDHomerun is connected to my network and i use WMC to watch tv shows from it. You can tell WMC to DVR to certain drives so you could point to a NAS drive and have it record there. But i really don't DVR much due to my SB, CP, Sab setup.

Ah, ok. I'm not wanting to run my only desktop with a 900w power supply just to record. I'm hoping I can figure out a software solution for recording (MythTV, XBMC-PVR, etc) running on my headless FreeNAS w/FBSD jail.

Well remember your psu can peak power around 900, it doesn't mean it's pulling that 24/7. It's based on your components on how much power draw. So if your CPU and video cards need a ton of power then you using a bunch.

I built me a quad core computer just to have SB, Sab, CP on it running 24/7 that also has XBMC as a media front. I am also trying out plex and seeing how that is. To my surprise i put the plex server on an old dual core system and pointed it to my nas, Then went downstairs and put the plex frontend on a machine and it automatically detected the plex server and started playing everything. I was impressed no configuration at all to use the bare minimum

Ah. I'm set for my DLNA stuff. I just need a way to record. I've got my headless FreeNAS system running on an HP N40L aching to do more, rarely cracking 5% CPU in a week. I'm considering SB/Sap/CP too, I just want a way to handle my real time video from TV (football/basketball/primetime/etc).

Playback at my TVs/projector is done via WDTV & works great. Very neat lil set top.
