My NAS has largely sat idle for the past year or more, and I have a renewed desire to get it current. Google search results point to a tutorial that uses an upgrade link which is no longer available.

Do I just have to do a fresh install and reconfigure, or is there a way for me to upgrade from this 2.5 year old build of FreeNAS?

You can upgrade but you should do it in stages, and of course backup your configuration file. Upgrade to 9.3.1 and then 9.10, and finally 9.10.2-U2. DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR POOL! You will get an alert to upgrade your pool to add new features but don't do it. Wait until you know everything works and then wait another month. If you upgrade your pool and then want to move back to an older version, odds are you will be stuck.

Now if you have a very simple configuration on your machine it would be quicker to just install 9.10.2-U2 as a clean install and then setup your configuration, but that is up to you.
