Hello,
I upgraded to 9.1.1 (from 8.3.1) around an hour ago and with the upgrade I was greeted by the alert system with a message that reads "The volume Main (UFS) status is UNKNOWN." I am nervous about losing the files that I have on my system and am coming here for guidance. I notice that the UFS volume manager now is described as legacy. Would that have anything to do with my problem? Should I be reverting back to the previous version that I had installed? I made a copy of my configuration before I updated, thankfully.

What is the best course of action to take here? Any ideas or guidance would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
New2NAS

Finally, just to add further detail to this post. I'm afraid that the manual import will erase the previous content that I had on my hard drive. Also, what name do I chose for the volume? Is it safe to select the previous name or will the same name cause information to be over written? See the image if things are unclear:

It seems from the photo below that I shouldn't be using the UFS Volume Manager either:

I would try and use the auto import feature but the volume does not appear:

Thanks for your patience.

I'd stop and see if your SATA controller is supported in 9.x. Sounds like it might not be and as soon as you upgraded the disks were no longer available to use.

I'd try going back to 8.3.1 and uploading your old config file and see if everything works. Unfortunately UFS support in the forums is a bit thin as so few people use it. UFS is even slated to be axed from FreeNAS after 9.2.0.

Could you please also provide more information about your original volume setup? How many drives (or just that single ada0)? Stripe/mirror/raid3?

Cyberjock - I think I may take your advice and revert to 8.3.1

Dusan - Thanks for the follow up!
My original set up is very simplistic. There is only one volume it is the ada0 volume that is listed. In terms of stripe/mirror/raid3 I believe those don't really apply in my system. I do not have a ZFS system. Being that I have UFS and that I only have one drive I have no raid. (I'm sorry there is probably a technical term for this that I am unaware of. If you know please share, I feel the vocabulary is important)

Background -
I started with FreeNas 7 well before the split between FreeNAS and NAS4Free. At the time I just wanted to stream my movies from a location other than my laptop. I got it working FreeNas working and didn't do much to the system. I had issues earlier this year with my original set up. At that point I installed FreeNAS 8.3.1 and continued what I had started. Last night I decided to upgrade to 9.1.1 so that I could see what Plex is about. Regret is slowly sinking in.

Alright, the worst has happened. I'm not sure that I can revert to 8.3.1. I reinstalled 8.3.1 from an iso and installed to a flash drive. Then after getting some errors I was able to access the webgui. Using the webgui I uploaded my previous configuration file and the system rebooted a number of times. Now it seems that the system has gotten hung up and does not start FreeNas. It seems to cycle once or twice with the same intialization and then abruptly ends. See photo:

Stripe/mirror/raid3 are the three UFS options available in FreeNAS when creating a volume out of several drives -- that was the reason for my question.
I'm now not sure that going back to FreeNAS 8.3.2 will help you as your single drive (ada0) is being recognized in FreeNAS 9.1.1 (btw. you need ZFS to use plugins, so you won't be able to try Plex with your current setup).

I typed the post above before seeing your last post.
All is probably not lost yet. da0s1 is the USB stick. What is worrying are the ada0 warnings/errors -- ada0 is your data drive. Try to reinstall FreeNAS again, or try a different USB stick. If it boots please post output of "gpart list ada0".

Thanks again for helping Dusan. I'm in the midst of reinstalling again from 8.3.1. -- Same result.
I'll try a different USB stick also.

How would I post out of "gpart list ada0"? I will do whatever I can do save the data on this disk.

Update- I was successful in reverting to 8.3.1!!
Phew. I was literally shaking the entire time at the thought that I had lost hundreds of hours of work.

Method-
I used an older configuration file and after what seemed to be an hour of the system rebuilding something (I wish I had a photo of the screen to be more precise) the system is working again. Although, the NAS is a bit outdated and missing a few users I am happy.

Lessons-
I learned that upgrading in my situation requires a bit more consideration. Despite the events, I would still like to update to 9.1.1 but I'll be more researched the next time I do it.

A little more help-
If anyone would like to share their experiences of going from a UFS system to a ZFS system I would be very interested in reading them. I've been putting off buying another hard drive, I've given myself a great reason to stop procrastinating. Also, I'll look into the SATA controller. I didn't realize that hardware compatibility would become an issue when upgrading.

Thanks-
cyberjock thanks for the consideration. Dusan you've been great thanks for coming back to my posts so frequently and providing your suggestions.

Stay classy FreeNasers

Run it via the web GUI shell and past the output here.

EDIT: I'm late again... :)
