Started update from 9.10.1 u4 using browser update. Set the boot to activate 9.10.2. reboot resulted in the terminal spinning through the menu stopping here:
init: getting repeating too quickly on port /dev/tty0. sleeping 30 secs
The computer only responded to a hard reset (/OFF).
Backed up to u4 in the boot environment menu. All appears to be in order.
9.10.2 was NOT in the boot boot environment menu.
I deleted 9.10.2 from the Boot tab.

Help?

This is getting very irritating having to ask people to post their system specs. How about posting your system specs.

Also did you do a search for the error message? I found a lot of hits for this issue and while none of these may be the exact solution, it would give you something to look at. Here is one such link.

My advice (not knowing your hardware configuration) is to take a new USB Flash Drive (assuming you are using a USB Flash drive as the boot device) and clean install FreeNAS 9.10.2 and see if it boots up fine. Do not use your original USB boot drive because it lets you access your data without issue so don't destroy it. After this then restore your configuration file. If you have an issue after that, it could be something you have installed.

I had an issue with the GUI upgrade as well. I didn't have SSH access setup and the CLI was having an issue that looked like a stuck key or something. So I created another update USB Stick and booted off of that and then re-did the upgrade from the install USB to the existing USB. SO far everything is working as expected.

I performed the update yesterday myself on one of my FreeNAS systems and during the update it rebooted once and then came up fine. The purpose for the first reboot is intentional, it's part of the process. So no problems on my end but then again, I don't use USB Flash drives in FreeNAS.

Well I'm real sorry you are getting irritated. Shame you can't show some patience for those of us who aren't forum experts. A simple 'how about posting your specs, here's how ...' would be a bit friendlier. So instead of being Mr high and mighty perhaps a bit of help, which is why this forum exists, would be MUCH better.

As with the last update I will have to figure this out on my own....

I removed 9.10.2 and started again and now it it hung on the update.

Thanks for being such a nice person.

Sorry I struck a nerve with you. I'm getting irritated because people who join the forum do not read and follow the forum rules which are very basic rules. Simply put, try to search for the problem first, odds are it's happened before which is true in your case. If you need to post a question then include your system specs and any details about the problem.

The forum exists to help people which is true but I don't like to spoon feed people. If I can help them figure out how to help themselves then they will be better off in the long run.

I removed 9.10.2 and started again and now it it hung on the update.

And it doesn't sound based on your specific words that you tried a clean install but rather another upgrade. I gave you sound advice but it doesn't appear that you took it. But if you did in fact use a new USB Flash drive and tried to install 9.10.2 from the ISO image, then please state that as it does make a difference form an upgrade. Also, post your system specs as this may help us as well.

Lets be very clear here, the folks out here trying to offer assistance cannot assume anything about the person or system on the other end, I certainly do not. I assume everyone knows nothing as this allows us to be on the same page. If I assumed you knew basic FreeBSD commands (how we started this endevour many years ago) and you didn't, or that you have a properly configured system with 8GB RAM but you really had a 4GB RAM system, well shame on me for not having that basic information. It's not easy to diagnose a problem over the internet without all the required information.

Never got past your first sentence. You cop and attitude, then think I will read what you have to say? Funny!

FIRST: I did search for this anomaly with no similar posts found. Was surprised to see 9 pages of failed 9.10.2 update posts!

SECOND: Is there a 'system' file you would like to see please tell me what file that is so I can include it.. I can list information about my server but have no idea what is and what is not helpful to you. A simple list... 'Please include the following when posting' would be a nice response.
Here you go, what I know:
Dell Optiplex 960
2 terabyte drives.
Hostname freenas.local
Build FreeNAS-9.10.1-U4 (ec9a7d3)

Platform Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz

Memory 7999MB

System Time Sun Dec 25 09:21:11 EST 2016

Uptime 9:21AM up 1:07, 0 users

Load Average 0.17, 0.28, 0.40

THIRD: I do not have 'spare' memory sticks hanging around. I will consider buying one and trying a fresh install...

I would think that the developers would be interested in failed updates rather being snotty about it.

Merry Christmas.

As you indicated there have been several failed upgrade attempts and as far as I could tell, most were resolved by performing a clean installation and a few others were resolved with some ivp6 changes. And the developers are aware of issues during the upgrades, it is mentioned in the bug reports. I am hopeful that a clean install fixes your issues. BTW, I'm not a developer, while I was active when FreeNAS 8 came out, I have since stopped coding. Developing FreeNAS now requires learning programming languages I don't have the time to learn.

The output from "dmesg" put in code tags would be helpful. It will give us the general hardware makeup and some other info.

If you're still upset because of my first comment, I'll bow out and maybe someone else will be more than glad to jump in and lend a helping hand. I leave it in your hands.

Rather than focus on the forum posts with 9.10.2 problems, please do a forum search on your error message.

Unfortunately you spelled it wrong, so perhaps you didn't find anything. It should have been "getty repeating too quickly on port ..." Here's a forum search for that: https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...y+repeating+too+quickly+on+port&t=post&o=date

Often, doing a fresh install on a new boot device and restoring the configurion, resolves this problem.

FIRST: I did search for this anomaly with no similar posts found. Was surprised to see 9 pages of failed 9.10.2 update posts!

BTW, the FreeNAS developers rarely visit the forums. 99% of the support provided on these forums is done by volunteers like joeschmuck.
