Unreadable Sector: Different disks same slot...Coincidence?

A few months ago I got a critical alert for unreadable sectors. I swapped the old Ironwolf for a WD, and I was on my way. No issues until today...

I received another critical alert for the new drive that's in the same slot as the old one.

Is this coincidence or something else?

It could be something else. I have a rack server at work that has a bay that repeatedly kills drives. I can't figure out why, but the drives develop bad sectors. All the other drives in the system are original, but this one slot has killed three drives in the past six years.

Can you give more details about the kind of error you are seeing?

@Chris Moore
Here's what I see under dashboard/alerts unless there are more details found elsewhere?
"Device: /dev/ada7, 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors."

Since the issues appear to remain with the given drive location, here are a few things off the top of my head that I'd look into:
1) Maximum Drive Temp (use smartctl -x /dev/adax to hopefully view this) The reason I ask is because maybe this location does not get enough cooling.
2) In your original troubleshooting did you only swap drive locations and nothing else? I ask because it could be a power issue, even a data cable although not likely.
3) How often do you run a SMART Long/Extended test? I recommend once a week and then a Short test daily.

Post the output of your SMART results.

If it is still under warranty, they will replace it.
Agreed! RMA it if possible.

Now I have a "faulted" drive, after resilvering, in a different spot and a different hard drive. it's another WD drive. Ugh.

Code:
Pool Media state is DEGRADED: One or more devices are faulted in response to persistent errors. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
The following devices are not healthy:
Disk 11629615934624269482 is FAULTED
2020-12-21 19:38:05 (America/New_York)

@joeschmuck I replaced the drive before reading your post. Yes, only changed the drive...hot-swapped. I have not done any SMART tests.

Is it odd that only one drive has read values? Here's the output for the faulted drive, da3:
Code:
freenas# smartctl -x /dev/da3

Drive da3 (S/N:WCC4E7ZD84ZZ) has not had a SMART Long/Extended test run on it. Run this test on all of your drives, you can do this for all the drives, just issue the command smartctl -t long /dev/ada0 and change "ada0" to each drive, do not add "p2". When you start each test there will be a message indicating how long it will take to complete this test, make sure you let it complete before cycling power to the drives. If you use the NAS then that will add time to the test. For example your drive above would take 517 minutes (Over 8.6 hours) if the NAS was just sitting idle, but if you used the NAS then you could expect to add time, how much depends on how busy the NAS is. For your drive I would let it run overnight. When you check the drive status again it will tell you when the drive performed the last test (recorded in power on hour time) and if it passed or not.

Is it odd that only one drive has read values?
I don't understand what you are saying. Try again and be very descriptive with your words, you do not want me to make assumptions as that could easily lead us down the wrong path. If other SMART results look odd to you, then post them all so we can tell you if it's okay or not. Right now I'm assuming that you have never tested or rarely test your hard drives and just wait for them to fail and then hope someone can dig you out of a deep hole.

I hope things go well for you.

I posted an image with that comment. Guessing you don't see it? I went to storage > disks. The table shows read, write, checksum values...all my drives say "0" except da3 drive which states "171" under the Read column. Hope that helps.

Running it now, and I will report back in about 700 minutes.

EDIT: I see you are running the long test now, make sure you do this for all your drives, you do not need to wait until thei one drive completes to start testing the other drives. These tests are all built into the hard drive, you are just telling the test to start.

I understand what you are saying now. I would highly recommend to you that you setup what I recommend for SMART tests, which is daily run a SMART Short Test on all hard drives, and weekly run a SMART Long Test on all hard drives. I run my SMART Short tests at I think 12:10 AM every day of the week, those tests generally take 2 minutes to complete and they will be done well before a Long test starts. Then at 12:20 AM on Sundays I start the SMART Long tests for all the hard drives. These are the low usage hours but you can choose whatever you desire.

Once you have completed a SMART Long test on all hard drives, check the SMART data for anything of concern.

After all that is done and the results are looking good, I'd recommend running another Scrub, see if things are all cleared up after that.

Added all drives to the test. Assuming my terminal will display results when completed? If so, I'll post the readout. I doubt I'll know what to look for since this is my first time. And I haven't researched it enough yet.

Smart! I'll do the same.

Please understand that these are just my recommendations, you may change this to whatever you feel comfortable with. If you power off your system often then you need to take this into consideration because that will abort the test. It won't cause a failure or data corruption, it's just a simple abort, but yo will want to schedule the long tests have the ability to complete the test. You can also run one Long test per drive a day and this will allow your system to operate well while the testing occurs. So that would be drive 1 on Monday, drive 2 on Tuesday, etc. I can afford to test all mine at once because of how I use my system, others will find it difficult if they have a very active system.

After reading the HD guide it appears that da3 is not looking good.

# 1 Extended offline Completed: read failure 90% 6588 119447200
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 29

Edit: And it has a new alert on my TrueNas dashboard > alerts:
Device: /dev/da3 [SAT], Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1.

I agree, drive S/N: WCC4E7ZD84ZZ is faulty.

Also drive S/N: WCC4E0CPLJFH
12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 070 070 000 Old_age Always - 30426
192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 162 162 000 Old_age Always - 29092
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 189 189 000 Old_age Always - 34205

This drive obviously was powered on and off 30,426 times. This makes me think you grabbed an old drive that you abused (maybe a strong word but you get my point) for several years, well I hope it was over a long period of time and not over a month or something like that. Hard drives (spinning rust) like to run and will typically live longer if you keep them cool and leave them spinning.

Your other drives all look good. Make sure that you have automatic SMART tests set to run and periodically verify each drive to ensure that short and long tests are actually happening.

Good Luck!

Edit: And it has a new alert on my TrueNas dashboard > alerts:
Device: /dev/da3 [SAT], Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1.
If not already done, make sure you are setup for email notification on failure. It's in the FreeNAS/TrueNAS User Guide.

I'm now set up to do long SMART tests for all disks weekly, and short tests daily. Based on my usage this will be fine, for now.

I updated my email settings and I'm now receiving alerts. I had it configured incorrectly.

What settings do you recommend for SMART service options? Was reading the guide but not sure if I should change anything.

Yes, super old drives. I have two new drives coming this weekend to replace the bad drives.

Thank you for the help @joeschmuck. Much appreciated.
