Hello, I looked around but couldn't find anyone with this problem.

I recently updated my TrueNAS server from 12.0.U1.1 to U2.1 and since this change I cannot install ubuntu 20.04 in a bhyvevm.

When runningU2.1, I installed 2 linux vm using ubuntu 20.04.1 live server amd64 with no problem. After the update, the VM kept running. Without going into to much detail, I deleted them and now I am trying to install a new vm on a new 1 drive pool (it's a 500GB ssd, see below for my setup) and this is where I can't seem to make it work.
The installer crashes instantly with a write error followed by kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found (so I'm guess it can't write to my disk?)

I have tried both ubuntu 20.04.1 and 20.04.2 with not success.
I've tried both AHCI and VirtIO with same result.

I've also tried using the ubuntu 20.04.1-legacy installer but ,

My system:
MB: ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4AM4
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
RAM: 2*16GB Kingston 2666MHz DDR4 ECC CL19 DIMM 2Rx8 Micron E
Drives:
- 5 * WD Red 4TB + 3 * Seagate IronWolf 4TB in RAIDZ2
- 1 * WD Blue SN550 500GB M.2 NVMe in stripe
- 1 Samsung 860 EVO 250GB SSD (boot)

Sorry, premature posting. I meant to say I tried the legacy installer but did not help me. The efi bootfile was giving me a Unsupported format error when I tried to execute it.

I'm including a screenshot of the kernel panic below.

I was wondering if anyone else have encountered a similar issue?

I have just tested ubuntu-20.04.2-live-server-amd64.iso on TrueNAS 12.0.u2.1 and I have encounter no particular issue, it works as usual.

I have installed ubuntu-20.04.2-live-server-amd64.iso with the serial console on the following hardware
  • Shuttle DS77u
  • Intel Celeron 3865U + 16 GB DDR4 (2x Kingston HyperX 8 GB DDR4)
  • Network: Intel i211 + Intel i219LM
  • Boot disk: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500GB NVMe
  • Data disk: Samsung SSD 860 EVO 2TB SATA
  • OS: TrueNAS-12.0u2.1

Must be a problem specific to my setup then. I ended up installing ubuntu 18.04, which works as expected, and doing an release upgrade.

Thanks for testing.

I had exactly this problem with 20.04 but only if i took the default option. If i selected the graphics safe mode it all ran fine
