Checksums of all blocks
Copy on Write safety

But the first item only tells you when you've had a block go bad or bit rot. The second item keeps the filesystem from needing to get checked.

There is no harm in going to zfs for a single disk filesystem.

The primary reasons to avoid ZFS are lower performance and substantially(!) higher memory requirements. You have to determine whether or not the awesome features you gain with ZFS are worth the tradeoffs. With CPU and memory both being pretty cheap, it's been pretty compelling for us to take advantage of ZFS for large filesystems.
