Trying to keep it simple. Will it work?

I would buy a synology DS916+ if it wasn't for the fact that I would like more power and memory options for future possibilities. I'll be using this NAS as a file server and Plex server, with the possibility of running a VM or two down the road. I'm on a tight budget, so I was wondering if the following would work or if there were better options at this price point:

HP Proliant ML30 gen9 Server
4 - 4TB WD Red Drives in RaidZ (Have 3 already)
Upgrade Memory to 32GB out of the box(64GB eventually)
USB Stick for OS (Have already)

Thoughts are appreciated.

Search the forum and you should be able to find out about several inexpensive alternatives. Example:

Holy crap.

It costs $199, but it clearly has well over $199 worth of parts in it. Jesus. ?? I should buy some of these and scrap them.

Yeah, it'd probably be cheaper to rip the guts out of one of those and put them in an R5 case than actually buying individual components (if you needed more than 6 drives).

Edit: fixed drive number

Damn. Throw in IPMI and another 100 bucks and I'd buy it. By the truckload.

Hmm, I wonder if it's limited to Windows. It uses an i219 NIC, which doesn't support sharing with a BMC (I'd make a joke about being promiscuous with the BMC, but promiscuous mode is a real thing...) - but I guess AMT is very PCH-centric, and the i219 is essentially just the MAC for the PCH's built-in GbE controller, so it'd be doable with some firmware trickery and System Management Mode, at the very least in the UEFI console. It does lead to something of a performance penalty, since the encoding and transmission of the framebuffer isn't offloaded to a separate processor...

I bought one back in March. I'm currently running Plex on Server 2012 R2 (blasphemy), but I bought it with the intention of possibly using it for FreeNAS in the future. Since I already had a SiliconDust HomeRun, I wanted to look at Plex's DVR solution. I didn't have any spare machines, with the horsepower to run Plex. This weekend, I plan to look at the newly announced LiveTV option.

And, yes, HP says it will accomodate 6x3.5" devices, but not out of the box. 4 is easy. I believe one needed a bracket and cable kit for a 5th drive. And, something else for the spot where the DVD sits (this deal includes a DVD-R/W).

Given the iffyness around AMT and that I don't have a monitor that supports display port, I ended up buying a DP->VGA adapter.
