Hi,

im new with truenas, i installed truenas to as vm only in my hyper-v. and i want to import the pool from another Nas server which is not a truenas.

i just want to use the truenas for sharing etc. but my pool and disk will be from other nas.

is it possible?

That's OK. Welcome.

Maybe not the best choice... ESXi has good support, less so for Proxmox and even less for Hyper-V. Read this article to make sure you're not headed for disaster: https://www.truenas.com/community/t...ide-to-not-completely-losing-your-data.12714/

In a way, yes, but probably not exactly as you thought.

TrueNAS works exclusively with ZFS, so if you don't have a ZFS pool in your current NAS, you will need to import the data to a ZFS pool (which can't be using those original source disks at that time).

Depending on what your other NAS was/is and how many disks you had, there may be options for importing the data with disks inserted into TrueNAS, but I am imagining that it's unlikely.

Please share your hardware setup in more detail so we can help you consider the best path.

OK, that's a bit different.

In order to work properly ZFS needs direct access to the disks it's operating with. what you're proposing puts that in the hands of the QNAP instead, so is absolutely not recommended (and is really difficult to set up anyway, since the product isn't designed to allow it).

hi, how about if i use dell EqualLogic for disk? is it possible?
TrueNAS isn't going to work properly if you have the storage in another system. It's designed for directly attached storage (attached over SAS/SATA, not iSCSI or other networked options).

I would be technically incorrect to say it can't be done, but it most certainly shouldn't be done if you want things to work properly.

ZFS will operate best/correctly when it has direct access to the disks it's working with. If you try anything other than that, you're likely to be unhappy in one way or another (data loss or poor performance, or both).
