Truenas Scale with PiHole VM - Scale cannot access internet through DNS

I installed a PiHole as a virtual Machine and Truenas Scale could not access the internet. I set the DNS on my router so everything in my network would go through PiHole. Everything else works fine except Truenas Scale that the VM resides on. The only way I could get it to work again was adding a second nameserver in the global network settings. Now everything is working except the email notifications. something is still blocking it. It was working fine prior to setting up PiHole. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Prior to creating the vm did you create a Bridge so the vm can Talk to the Host?

No I did not create any bridges. I have another vm with Plex that also can’t connect to storage a pool on the same machine but connects fine to a pool on a different server.

I did the standard vm setup. Can I set up the bridge to the existing vm and host? The vm is accessible from all other devices on my network, just not the host
