Considering that Joyent's SmartOS is "converged", capable of running Linux containers (via binary translation) and has storage capabilities (maybe not as advanced), I don't understand what TrueNAS Scale brings to the table, other than the brand name and maybe FreeNAS tools?
Why not just put a TrueNAS GUI/framework on top of SmartOS and its pre-existing tools instead of making a Debian fork? FreeBSD (and TrueNAS Core/Enterprise) is more likely to benefit from Illumos code than Debian code (ZFS, DTrace, etc.).
