Hi all.
I have an 8 year old HP Microserver (Gen8, Celeron CPU) running TrueNAS. I am looking to replace with something more modern. The server has 16GB ECC RAM and 3x WD Red 4TB drives in raidz1. I primarily use it for storage, backup, downloads, and serving Plex to the home. I would also like to extend it for a home lab using FreeBSD's hypervisor at some point. My requirements are as follows:

- Passively cooled
- Low-power consumption
- Tower cabinet (1U will not fit in my cupboard)
- Space for up to SATA 8 drives so I can extend; hot-swap ideal but not a must if cost is too high
- Beefy enough CPU to run a couple of VMS and serve one television set with Plex (I watch a lot of movies at home)
- ECC RAM for integrity check

Instead of buying another microserver, I would like to do my own build this time. Can anyone recommend a relatively low-cost configuration for the above? I am a long-time FreeBSD user, so I expect to run either vanilla FreeBSD or continue on BSD-based TrueNAS (i.e. not Scale).

Many thanks.

Anders
