SO! First post. Anyway

I'm new to the whole NAS thing, TBH i started this as a "how crazy can I get with this" hobby.

So, the NAS its self:
mobo is a Chinese dual X99 generic you find everywhere on Amazon.
CPU is a pair of zeon V4 2680s
Ram is 8 sticks of ECC DDR4 16gig sticks pulled from old serves.
TP link tx201 pcie network card
Old vid card... it works... (AMD 7770 the old one)
an Adaptec ASR-71605 6Gb/s SAS SATA PCIe RAID Controller set to pass-through not hardware raid
5 HITACHI 3TB SAS 3.5s mounted on a hot swap back plane
currently running TrueNAS-13.0-U5.3 the free one.

gaming PC:
5800X
asusX570pro
zotac twinedge 3070
64gigs of ripjaws Gskill 16gig sticks
volans VLrj45s usb3 (no room for an internal card)

So the setup I had working was simple.
A 10tib zvol set up on the i-scsi protocol, my gaming comp read this as a local drive. I used this video to set it up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JL-RVUHj6o
it was networked through a ZTE modem/router using onboard gigabit networking. It also worked with the 2.5gbs network cards (on the nas and my gaming system) going through the ZTE modem/router

however, i then had the bright idea to add a Grandsteam 5 port unmanaged 2.5gbs switch
on the ZTE, NAS and my gaming setup all plugged into this Switch instead of each other. On the surface it seemed to work a dream, crystal benchmark indicated a 2X improvement across the board. It was nice. Then I tried to play a game.

Steam said it launched, showed me in game, then just.... didn't. Game never launched. Warthunder told me I was launching an unsigned copy or what ever, but refused to launch regardless. No error codes there, some games i launched by their .exes would throw up "app unable to start correctly 0xc0000142" others "0xc000007b" and other still "0xc0150002"and others again "missing .dll" it was there i checked.

Trying to repair or reinstall any games would throw up a "corrupted update files" in the steam downloads (I tried running steam in admin mode, no change)
adding files manually is.... strange, small files seem to have no problem coming and going, but larger folders simply refuse to move, no error, no refusal msg. Just... nothing after CTRL C+V or click-drag

troubleshooting steps I have taken include but not limited to:
Restarts.... on both machines.
Removing the switch, the problem remains. Restarting after every switchover
Reverting back to onboard networking
Enabling full drive permissions on both ends.
Basically nuking the drives and starting with a fresh zvol (steam now simply downloads the game files, creates the folders... then adds nothing to them and claims corrupted updates files)

i've been at this for 2 days..... I'm sorry if I missed any info you need. Like I said, I'm new to this.

Do you guys have any inkling as to how I fucked this up? It seems like adding the switch screwed with.... SOMETHING, but for the life of me I can't find out what.
Considering just how... unconventional my setup is, googling everything just throws up unrelated problems.
