Hello,

For the past 2 years i have I have my ESXi with Freenas VM working very well.
In the beginning it was bit of a struggle (learning curve and such) but for the past one and a half year it didnt had any (zero!) issues.
Currently im running still on 9.10.2 U6 and it does what i has to do, run my network storage nice and happy.

For the past year+ i havent run any updates. My logic was: if it runs fine, dont touch it.

Right now im just wondering if it is time to upgrade/update or not? And if so, to what version?
Newest 9.10, 11.1 or 11.2.

What is wise to do?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Cougar,

the idea of don't fix it if it is not broken makes sense. There are new features and security updates that are important, but not to the point of risking your setup.

The risk when you go too far behind is that upgrading may end up either not possible anymore or problematic. Like here, I know enough to tell you that you should not jump from 9.10 to 11.2. Some changes in between were major and to jump multiple major changes at once is risky.

As for the very latest release, many people ended up in trouble with the 11.2U2 release. I would recommend you not to jump from way too old to way too new.

I would suggest you to do some upgrade but stay in the 11.1 series. Go in this thread and look at Chris Moore' recommended steps for doing your upgrade. He pointed to specific releases that should not be bypassed when coming back from too far. You may ask him directly what he would recommend to you because he clearly made many more upgrades than I did.

Good luck,

Thanks for your quick response, it makes sense not to jump to far between updates.
I will take a look at the link you send!

For now I’m thinking about upgrading to the latest 9.10 (with some steps in between as mentioned by you). And maybe wait with the upgrade to 11.1.
