Testing UPS with upscmd err access-denied?

Looked all over forums and can't find an answer. I'm trying to initiate a self-test on my UPS. Everything is detected and appears to be working, but when I attempt to initiate the following I get the 'err ACCESS-DENIED' message.

Unexpected response from upsd: ERR ACCESS-DENIED

What user account is supposed to be used for this? I've tried logins with root, admin, and usbmon and all get the same error. Any help would be appreciated.
