First step, is the driver you got, a FreeBSD driver?

If not, and if FreeNAS does not have a built in driver, then don't bother.

Hardware manufacturers tend to support the high volume or high profit
OSes first, like MS-Windows or Linux. It might take many months, even
years before we see FreeNAS support for that specific Ethernet chipset.

There are only a few Linux distros that directly support ZFS. Even fewer that directly support root FS on ZFS.

For example, I use Linux distro Gentoo. Mostly because I originally had a pretty slow media server and laptop,
which benefitted from the performance improvements I gained from custom software builds. While Gentoo has
excellent ZFS support, including root on ZFS, I would not recommend installing Gentoo for anyone. (Meaning if
you don't know about Gentoo, you are better served by another, easier to install and manage, Linux distro.)

You can check out the following which seem to support ZFS to varying degrees;
  • Ubuntu
  • Arch
  • Debian
  • CentOS / RHEL
  • Fedora
  • Devun
  • OpenSUSE
  • Antergos
The last one even supports installing ZFS as root FS, via installation GUI, (if I remember correctly).

I don't have a particular recommendation.
