I am reading the guides. Snapshots may be or not be for me. I'm still playing around with it. Actually my next step is to try to get virtualbox installed. I would like a vm or two such as Ubuntu server running. Can't find a decent tutorial though.

That's a really good point! I have to hand it to you! I'm just a beginner although I did thorough research before I started to use Freenas / zfs features.... I can't believe I am already starting to forget the newby pitfalls. As I consider myself one.

The rest of your argument are spot on also. Vm's will 'kill' you.

Thank you for your reply!

I use to be int he US Navy and now I'm a contractor for them. I troubleshoot technical problems remotely and I assume nothing other than the person on the other end is clueless. This attitude sounds crappy but it makes me a better troubleshooter because I assume nothing. Think of it like when you call the computer help line and tell them that your computer isn't able to do something. The first thing they tell you is to reboot your computer. Hey, they don't even know if it's powered on or stuck or anything.

Story time... My ex-brother-in-law worked at Microsoft DOS and Windows 3.1 Tech Support. He got a call one day from this woman stating her computer wasn't working. They verified the computer was up and running. He told her to double-click on the screen with her mouse on an icon. Nothing happened. He asked her to do it again. Again, nothing but he heard something. So he asked her to do it one more time. He hears "tink-tink" in the background. He asked her what the noise was. She said it was her hitting the screen with her mouse. She was literally tapping the screen with her mouse. He said to me that he told her to power off the computer, it was too advanced for her to operate. Well I'm sure he didn't say that out loud. So never make assumptions. If you provide troubleshooting help to someone you will find out assumptions will kill you.

You're not a newby and it's great that you took the initiative to research your project, I wish more people did it.

Thanks for the great story and the compliment I guess.
I do want to help others so I will try to remember not to assume anything.

Similarly I had to explain my mother that 'press any key' is not the same as 'press THE any key'... She had been staring at her keyboard for a long time to find it...

Assumptions........

Not possible since the release of 9.10.2. But with the release of 11, you'll be able to create VMs using iohyve through the web GUI.

I did try it on 11 but stuck with 9.10 because I couldn't get the unifi controller to install properly.

Hanging on to snapshots too long.

That is a big assumption to make. I assume nothing but the worst case. This user has two 4TB drives, I don't know if this is a mirror or stripe but lets assume mirror, this makes for a small pool and snapshots could eat it up quickly. I assume that with FreeNAS 11 and the addition of VMs, there could be a lot of data change going on. Setting up snapshots may be done poorly and again just eat up the storage.

I suspect that you understand what you are doing or you got lucky and set it up properly.

My warning is there to ensure the user reads about snapshots before they leap. There are a lot of theads here on the forum with the same problem of people running out of storage and it all started and ended with snapshots not being setup properly, not that you can't use snapshots.
Thing is, moving files between datasets counts as a copy and delete so can double usage if you are snapshotting.

@joeschmuck knows this ;)

Well I know this know. I don't use snapshots but I think I would come to that conclusion quickly if I did. But thanks for the vote of confidence.
