Supermicro clearly know that people are willing to pay for a special licence to update motherboard BIOS (in this case A1SRM-2558F) via IPMI. But they insist that one must clear the CMOS after the update and before setting BIOS defaults. I have rarely bothered to do this with other mb BIOS updates and not run into any obvious problems. Of course I can't exclude subtle ones!
Since having to go to the server and disconnect at least some of the cables nullifies much of the advantage of updating via IPMI, how essential do people think the CMOS erasure is?
