Sudden memory usage drop

What would cause freenas to suddenly release a bunch of memory? Just looking at my log and at 3PM this afternoon it went from 259MB free to 5.2GB free.

The only thing that I can think of is I did start streaming a movie to my phone through Plex around that time today. Would that make it release memory to handle the trans coding?

Well, without knowing *what* released the memory there's no way to know. But my first guess is that some program didn't need the RAM any more and released it.

Very true to the why ask why but being new to freenas and bsd just wondered if it was normal behavior. Hey it's still running great so I guess it's all good. :)

Yeah, if its running then its probably fine.

I know I can take an ARC from any given size to about 100MB in about 10 seconds. Create some really big file (which fills the ARC) and then delete it. Poof, ARC is instantly shrunk. ;)
