Hi everybody

I need to get my FreeNAS Box for my company to work with Antivirus software (currently all my clients have AV software installed, but i want this on my FreeNAS box as well. Sufficient hardware resources exist :) )

I have a valid supscription for Sophos Antivirus and i read that FreeBSD 8+ is supported (http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/118590.aspx) for the managed Sophos installation.

Is there a possibility to install this in FreeNAS? This would be very cool as i can then manage this Sophos client from my Sophos Management Console (and modify/deploy its policy there, i.e. a scan once a day with the ZFS dataset)? :)

Cheers

The only option I can think of is to share your datasets/pools with a jail and install Sophos in a jail. Do note that if sophos doesn't support FreeBSD 9.x then you're already off to a bad start with this plan.

There is an antivirus for FreeBSD called ClamAV. I could be wrong but I *believe* it is free and is available in pkg-ng as well as ports, so that should be a slam dunk. However last I read ClamAV wasn't particularly great at finding viruses so there are drawbacks.

If you really are wanting to scan your server and use Sophos I think the simplest way is to simply mount all of the datasets on some Windows machine and let it scan the entire server over a weekend.

If you do get Sophos installed and working I'd recommend you provide some shorts instructions on how you got it working and the kind of performance you get.

Weird priorities they have, supporting Linux on Itanium and FreeBSD 6 but not FreeBSD 9 or 10...

OK than i don't neet to try this anymore, i thought that FreeBSD8+ means that FreeBSD 9 and 10 are supported as well :(
Then i stick to the plan, scanning through a proxy once a day which gets all the data via CIFS

Yeah, sounds like the best option.
