Hi,

I've got 8x Drives in a RAIDz2 array.

my NAS boot of an SSD, and I've set the System dataset to the boot-pool.
Doing that fixed alot of my issues with the disks not spinning down.

However, a couple times a day I can hear that my drives beep just before they spin down, meaning something caused them to spin up.

I got some small tops of ~20KB writes, that I have no idea what is causing.
(The big one is mail server backup writing at 23:30)

I have no Jails or VM's.

All of them show the exact same small write cycle.
Anyone know what I can check?

Why are you trying to keep your drives stopped? Starting and stopping the drives causes excess wear on the motor which will lead to premature failure of the drive.

Because I write to them more or less once a day, maybe read from them 3-5 times a week.

I'd prefer them to be spun down when not in use, to use less power and make less vibrations/noise.

Spinning disks like to be left spinning for 24/7 not spinning down and spinning up this will kill the drives a lot sooner. Vibration will also kill disks if you are having issues with vibration buy yourself a proper Hotswap Server Chassis.

Just a theory, but what's your snapshot schedule for that pool?

CRON jobs or SMART tests?

No Cron Jobs.

Smart Tests:

Scrub Task:

So nothing running that would cause a small write all days at a set hourly interval.

Just added the mapped driveletter on my HTPC towards my NAS, as an excluded folder in Windows protection, to see if its background scanning
