Some specific video files fail to copy across VLANs

This is driving me crazy. I have TrueNAS Scale virtualized in an ESXi host, which is conected to a pfsense firewall. TrueNAS is on a server subnet, and I have Linux and Windows computers on another subnet. I created an SMB share and connected to that share from all desktops which works fine. Copying files works fine for most files, but there are some files that refuse to copy to the SMB share. When I put the TrueNAS in the same subnet as the desktops, those files copy just fine.

What I don't understand is why %90 of the files work across VLANs, but just some of that fail. I used to get a network error but now it just says can't connect to the share while it is actually connected. I can copy another file right after that error.

Please help me with this weird situation.

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Please take a few moments to review the Forum Rules, conveniently linked at the top of every page in red, and pay particular attention to the section on how to formulate a useful problem report, especially including a detailed description of both your physical and virtual hardware. Also please compare your virtualization setup to the forum's virtualization guide at

and let us know if you've done anything different.

You've basically given no one anything to work with, so the responses will tend to be random guesses rather than anything useful.

My TrueNAS Scale is virtualized on ESXi, with a passthrough HBA. As I told before, when TrueNAS and desktops are on the same subnet, everything works. I copied a lot of data to the SMB share, and everything went through just fine from both Windows and Linux machines.

But my topology has to have TrueNAS on another subnet. Firewall rules are configured correct, I have layer 3 connectivity. With this setup, I can copy %90 of the files fine but there are some files which I was able to copy before fail. I don't see any blocks in firewall logs. The same files fail no matter what I do.

This problem also is persistent on NFS shares. I tried it now and the same files fail on NFS shares as well.

Works for everyone else. Check your pfSense host and make sure you're not NAT'ing the traffic, and all the normal issues like that. Without detailed insight into your setup, as I said above, this devolves into a game of random guesses.

I am not NAT'ing. I don't know what to give to you, let me know what you need.

I tested with a samba share on a laptop and the results are the same, so this is not a TrueNAS issue, but a samba issue. It is probably something with pfsense but nothing is blocked currently so I am out of ideas.
