SMB v3 and the Multichannel feature was introduced to Server 2012 and allows for increased bandwidth simply by plugging more network cables into the switch from the same machine.
e.g. I added one quad NIC card each to my two servers, connected the cables to my switch and the bandwidth between the two servers jumped from 110MB/s ish (maxed out) to about 370MB/s. There is no HW support required on the switch - no teaming required; and no special configuration in Windows, it works out of the box.
The cost for the increase in bandwidth above was >£50.
The next step up to increase bandwidth between those two servers would be 10GBE which would be a minimum of £100 per NIC and £500 for the switch.
Although the cost of 10GBE is coming down all the time, it is still prohibitive for a significant number of users of FreeNAS.
Therefore, will/when will FreeNAS support SMB 3 and Multichannel to achieve this significant price/performance boon?
