So I got some new old drives I wanted to test out - 3TB HGST HUS724030ALS640 for $18 / piece and these have ~39k hours. One drive showed a smart test error "Failed in second segment" with 0 hours, though the drive ran "fine" for 39,000 hours before I got it.
After I got the drive, I did a burn in of the drive : short -> long -> badblocks -> long smart tests and I did not see any more errors. So I deployed the drive and with the first scheduled short smart test, I noticed the Smart test error "Failed in second segment" again.
My questions-
How can 3 smart tests not get the error and the 4th gets it again? It is not the drive that worries me (plenty of spares), but that the burn-in tests did not catch this.
Does anybody know what this error really means? Just curious, I could not find it.
I noticed @Johnny Fartpants points out that this error isnot a real issue. (correction)
