SMART Service Not Starting

I've had SMART service running from boot since I've had FreeNAS installed (June 17), but the service refuses to start on boot or start manually from the GUI. I can run smart test manually but it'd be nice to get some automated help. Any ideas? Should I reinstall FreeNAS?

(Running 11.1U4, just a normal 2x2x4TB mirror connected to an H170 motherboard.)

Check if SMART is enable for one or more USB devices, like your boot device, go to Storage -> View Disks, click on it/them and disable SMART, you should now be able to start the SMART service.

There was an issue with 11.1 and the SMART service. But I am 99.9% sure that was solved by U4.

Redcoat, I tried shutting smart off for each drive in storage -
Apr 5 16:21:50 freenas smartd[21977]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:21:55 freenas smartd[22383]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:22:05 freenas smartd[22982]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:22:10 freenas smartd[23343]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:22:19 freenas smartd[23668]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:22:24 freenas smartd[23986]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:22:34 freenas smartd[24282]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:22:39 freenas smartd[24555]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Apr 5 16:22:48 freenas smartd[24792]: Unable to register device /dev/da0 (no Directive -d removable). Exiting.
Still can't start service.
Weird!

Think I fixed it - had to turn SMART on and off in the storage GUI for my boot device (Sandisk Ultra Fit 16GB USB) and then off again. The service restarted successfully on reboot. Yay!
I guess the lesson is don't let the SMART service try to run for devices that don't support SMART. Seems reasonable.

I got bit by this issue when updating from 11.1-U4 to 11.1-U5. Boot device is a SanDisk Ultra Fit 32GB USB.

Fixed it the same way as brewnino. Logged into the GUI, went to Storage -> View Disks, edited my USB boot device (da0), unchecked "Enable S.M.A.R.T." and hit OK. After rebooting, S.M.A.R.T. started automatically.

Hi. Most USB flash drives do support at least some partial S.M.A.R.T. under the SCSI/ATA conventions.
As above, disabling S.M.A.R.T. for the problem device works, or the alternative is to add this to the "S.M.A.R.T extra options" field: -d removable

"removable - the device or its media is removable. This indicates to smartd that it should continue (instead of exiting, which is the default behavior) if the device does not appear to be present when smartd is started. This Directive may be used in conjunction with the other '-d' Directives. - https://linux.die.net/man/5/smartd.conf
