Have this obsession lately with downsizing my computing devices.

Thoughts on a single 3.5" drive, with copies=2 applied to "important stuff" ? Currently use 2 x 3.5" mirrored, videos and all (disposable to some degree). The really small ITX cases will provide for 1 x 3.5".

Still would using ECC ram of course, still making regular backups.

At first I wasn't sure you had a question but I think the question is if we feel a single hard drive is sufficient provided you have two copies of the files on the hard drive.

Simple answer is: No, because if you have a drive failure then all your data is gone. But it's really up to you if you want to take that risk. In reality if you were going with that approach then maybe you should consider just using an external USB hard drive for movies and connect them directly to the TV or media player device. that would slim things down quickly.

Yes, this old article had me considering it.

A 2 x 2.5" mirrored file server should be sufficient then... and I probably will go with that approach for movies.
